What is a Magnetic Separator? A Magnetic Separator machine is an industrial equipment that uses a magnetic force to separate magnetic materials from non-magnetic ones. Its primary purpose is to protect other equipment (like crushers, shredders, or milling machines) from damage, remove ferrous contaminants, and purify powder and other materials. Magnetic separation equipment plays an essential role in purifying various materials, from dry particulates to liquids and slurries. Industries such as grain, sugar, plastics, oil, textiles, and even recycled products often rely on these tools to eliminate ferrous tramp metal contaminants. Among the various types of magnetic separation equipment available are magnetic plates, drums, pulleys, and belts, all of which play a pivotal role in ensuring the purity of products and safeguarding equipment from potential damage.
Magnetic Separator Working Principle: How Does It Work?
The electromagnet is constructed with a solenoid coil housed within a sturdy steel casing as you see in the diagram above labeled “step 2”. This setup produces a consistent and intense magnetic field within the coil’s inner area.
Situated inside the coil’s bore is a container filled with filter elements, commonly termed as the matrix. This matrix is comprised of expanded steel plates layered in a specific manner to create staggered openings that facilitate material flow.
The matrix serves a triple purpose:
- It intensifies the external magnetic field
- Creates areas with extremely high gradient
- Offers sites for the attraction and retention of ferrous impurities
The canister comes equipped with a dual vibratory drive mechanism that gives the matrix a subtle, high-frequency shake. As materials pass through this vibrated, magnetized matrix, contaminants containing iron are trapped, resulting in a purified end product. Meanwhile, the non-magnetic constituents move smoothly through the canister, an action facilitated by the vibratory motion of the matrix.
