Battery Material Recycling with Dusenfeld

Elcan Industries has partnered with Duesenfeld, a developer of advanced lithium-ion battery recycling technology, to support the growing need for efficient recovery of valuable battery materials. Duesenfeld has developed a patented recycling process that combines battery discharge, mechanical processing, low-temperature vacuum drying, material separation, and hydrometallurgical recovery.

The Duesenfeld process is designed to recover valuable materials while avoiding the high-temperature treatment used in many conventional battery recycling processes. After batteries are discharged and mechanically processed, the material is separated into individual fractions including iron, copper, aluminum, and Duesenfeld Black® black mass containing the electrode active materials.

Through its additional processing technology, Duesenfeld can recover materials including graphite, lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from lithium ion batteries. Combined with Elcan’s experience in powder processing, particle separation, and battery material handling, the partnership brings together complementary technologies for companies working to recover and reuse valuable battery materials.

Black Mass Recycling Elcan Industries

Precision Sieving

Separate recycled battery powders by particle size using the HiSifter high energy sieving machine, with production capability down to 10 microns.

Air Classification

Separate extremely fine powder fractions using Elcan's ElbowJet Air Classifier for applications requiring classification below conventional sieving ranges.

Magnetic Separation

Remove trace ferrous contamination from recycled battery powders using high intensity electromagnetic separation technology.

Material Recovery

Recover usable powder fractions from recycled material streams to reduce waste and increase the amount of valuable material available for downstream processing.

Benefits of Battery Material Recycling with Elcan and Duesenfeld

The partnership between Elcan Industries and Duesenfeld brings together advanced battery recycling technology with decades of powder processing experience. Duesenfeld’s process is designed to recover valuable materials from lithium ion batteries through mechanical processing, separation, and material recovery methods that avoid conventional high temperature treatment. Elcan complements this technology with experience in sieving, air classification, magnetic separation, blending, and powder handling. Together, the two companies can support customers looking to recover materials such as black mass, graphite, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese while creating cleaner material streams for further refining, reuse, or downstream processing.

About Elcan Industries Toll Processing Services

Since our inception in 1993, Elcan Industries has focused on finding catered solutions to any screening and sieving problems that companies may be experiencing. We pride ourselves on doing the jobs that other sieving companies cannot do. We are always open to trying any particle separation, no matter how obscure or difficult it may seem. We have always focused on selling only the most advanced screening technologies available on the market. We can screen material from 10 mm to 10 µm and have achieved efficiencies of 95% or higher at all sizes.

FAQs

What battery materials can Elcan process?

Elcan can evaluate dry powder streams including black mass, graphite, cathode materials, anode materials, LFP, NMC, LCO, pCAM, and other battery related powders depending on the material characteristics and processing requirements.

Yes. Black mass can be evaluated using Elcan’s high energy sieving technology to remove oversize material, classify powder fractions, or prepare material for subsequent processing.

Yes. For finer separations, Elcan can evaluate the material using the ElbowJet Air Classifier, which is capable of classification down to approximately 0.5 microns depending on the material and required cut point.

Yes. Elcan can package processed powders into drums, bags, supersacks, and other bulk containers, depending on customer requirements.
