What is High Purity Quartz (HPQ)? High Purity Quartz is a specialized form of silica (SiO2) that contains very low levels of iron, making it critical in high tech industries. The high purity level, and its unique chemical and physical properties make it commonplace in industries like semiconductors, high performance glass and hydraulic fracking. Sieving and magnetic separation of High purity quartz are of the utmost importance in order to maintain particle size control and remove any ferrous contaminants from the powders. Sieving high purity quartz can be difficult due to the fine size of the powder (typically below 100um). The can lead to blinded screen meshes when using conventional screeners and the abrasiveness of the powder can quickly tear tensioned screen meshes. Removing ferrous contaminants must be done effectively in order to achieve very low PPM levels that pass the rigorous standards for advanced industries.
Elcan Industries has been effectively sieving high purity quartz powder at fine sizes down to 20 microns using our Hi-Sifter screening machine for many years. The system employs a vertical energy spectrum which prevents the fine particles from settling and blinding the screen mesh while also using a tensionless screen cloth, which allows for much longer screen life compared to an ultrasonic sieving machine or traditional shaker screener. A tumbler screener has also proven effective when making coarser separations at very high processing rates. The CG Electromagnetic separator has proven the solution when it comes to removing ferrous contaminants from HPQ. The system employs a stack of customizable matrixes that can achieve levels of below 10ppm post processing.
