Applications

Spherical Graphite

What is Spherical Graphite? Spherical graphite is a high-purity, high-performance form of graphite engineered specifically for use as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. It is produced by mechanically shaping natural flake graphite into smooth, rounded particles that offer higher tap density, better conductivity, and more stable cycling compared to unprocessed flake graphite. Spherical graphite is a core material in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, portable electronics, and other advanced battery technologies.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

Elcan Industries has worked extensively with battery material manufacturers to screen spherical graphite for EV-grade and energy storage applications. Using our Hi-Sifter high-energy screening machine, we can achieve consistent particle size cuts down to 10 microns, with sharp separations and no screen mesh blinding. The vertical energy introduced by the Hi-Sifter is ideal for keeping lightweight, rounded particles suspended, preventing agglomeration and ensuring a narrow particle size distribution.

For finer separations or when sub-10 micron cuts are needed, our Elbow Jet Air Classifier provides a screenless solution, ideal for classifying spherical graphite down to 5 microns. To support purity demands in battery production, we also deploy our CG Electromagnetic Separator, capable of reaching up to 18,500 GAUSS, to eliminate trace ferrous contaminants that could compromise battery safety or performance. Trials and toll processing can be conducted at our NY facility to validate material performance and scalability.

Why is Sieving Important for Spherical Graphite?

Now more than ever, battery manufacturers require tight particle size distributions, often between 5–30 microns, to ensure optimal packing density, conductivity, and consistent electrochemical performance. Oversized particles or fines can lead to uneven anode coating, poor electrical contact, reduced energy density, or even capacity fade. Due to its lightweight, hydrophobic, and static-prone properties, sieving spherical graphite is particularly challenging for traditional screeners, which often suffer from mesh blinding, inconsistent cuts, and agglomerate retention.
