Sieving Saffron Powder

What is Saffron Powder? Saffron powder is derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower and is one of the most valuable spices in the world by weight. While traditionally used in food and nutraceutical products, Saffron powder is increasingly being utilized in cosmetic formulations, fragrance bases, and pharmaceutical-grade compounds due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, because saffron is a natural product, the powder often contains unwanted floral debris, residual stigmas, or agglomerates that reduce its value, flowability, and visual consistency. Screening saffron requires gentle handling to avoid damaging the fine particles while still maintaining throughput and precision at fine particle sizes.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

Producers looking to scale Saffron powder production often face challenges with inconsistent particle sizes and contamination from unprocessed plant matter. Saffron must be sieved to tight tolerances below 200 microns to achieve a uniform particle size distribution, prevent clumping, and improve packaging, dispersibility, and blending in downstream formulations. Standard vibratory sieves tend to either clog or damage the delicate powder.

Elcan Industries specializes in screening difficult natural powders like saffron using the Allgaier tumbler screener, which offers gentle, elliptical motion to prevent degradation of the product while efficiently separating unwanted materials like stigmas and plant fibers. The Allgaier system is equipped with an air knife cleaning system, which continually clears the screen mesh surface without damaging the powders, allowing for extended run times and consistent throughput rates.

For customers requiring even finer separations below 200µm, Elcan offers secondary processing with the Hi-Sifter high energy sieving machine technology, which applies vertical energy to break up clumps and separate powder down to 38µm without screen mesh blinding. This dual-approach lets us tailor the process depending on the specific saffron grade and end-use requirements.

All processing takes place at our ISO 9001-certified toll processing facility in Tuckahoe, NY, with the ability to run both R&D trials and full-scale commercial batches.
