What is Black Mass? Black Mass is the first step in the battery recycling process and is based on the mechanical treatment of the batteries. After the battery has reached the end of its life, it can be dismantled and the components can be recycled. The “Black Mass” is a mixture of different Cathode and Anode materials, including Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, and Manganese. The term “Black Mass” is used because the mixture is typically dark in color.
In the pyrometallurgical process, the Black Mass is heated to high temperatures, and the metals are extracted by oxidation and reduction reactions. The remaining materials are then further refined to recover the metal compounds. In the hydrometallurgical process, the “black mass” is dissolved in acid, and the metals are separated through a series of chemical reactions. The recovered metals can then be used in the production of new batteries or other applications.
