Sieving Protective Powder Coatings

What Are Protective Powder Coating Powders? Advanced protective powder coatings are engineered blends of multiple powder components used in high-performance protective coatings. In the EV and energy storage sectors—especially for modular battery plant construction—these powders help achieve fire resistance, corrosion protection, thermal insulation, and uniform film thickness on structural steel. Typical coating powder formulations include resin polymers (such as epoxy, polyester, polyurethane, nylon, or polyethylene) that form the structural matrix; pigments like titanium dioxide, iron oxides, and carbon black for color and coverage; anticorrosive compounds such as zinc phosphate to protect metal surfaces; and filler powders such as calcium carbonate, silica, talc, and mica to enhance strength, improve flow, and introduce fire or UV resistance. Small amounts of additives or cross linkers are also included to modify curing behavior, visual effects, and long-term durability.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

Particle size distribution is a key performance factor in these coatings. For most powder coatings, particle sizes fall in the 20–100 micron range, but for EV and energy storage infrastructure, tighter specifications are often required. Applications such as intumescent coatings, thermal barriers, or dielectric insulation layers demand consistent flow behavior and film thickness—which can only be achieved by eliminating oversize particles and fines through sieving. Without precision screening, powders may cause defects like orange peel textures, inconsistent adhesion, or uneven film buildup—issues that compromise safety and longevity in EV environments.

Elcan Industries supports manufacturers of advanced powder coatings by providing precision sieving and air classification for these complex powder blends. Our Hi-Sifter screening system delivers high-energy vertical motion, ideal for deagglomerating resin, pigment, and filler powders down to 20 microns, while preventing screen mesh blinding. This energy-based approach supports even flow and stable film formation during electrostatic spray or fluidized bed application.

For even finer classifications, our Elbow Jet Air Classifier allows for screenless separation down to 10 microns, making it well-suited for intumescent or insulating powders that require uniformity at below 20 microns. In addition, Elcan’s CG Electromagnetic Separator removes trace contamination from coating powders, improving the performance of protective layers in high-voltage or corrosive environments.

All processing takes place at our ISO 9001 certified tolling facility in Tuckahoe, NY, with the ability to run both R&D trials and full-scale commercial batches.
