Applications

LFP for Stationary Energy Storage

What is LFP material? LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, is a lithium-ion battery cathode material known for its thermal stability, long cycle life, and safety advantages over other chemistries. In recent years, LFP has become a preferred choice for stationary energy storage systems, including grid-scale batteries, residential backup systems, and energy storage solutions for data centers and industrial sites. These applications favor LFP over other lithium-ion variants due to its non-toxic nature, thermal runaway resistance, and lower cost structure.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

Why is sieving LFP important? For battery-grade LFP to perform consistently in large-format stationary storage cells, powders must be tightly classified, often in the range of 10-45 microns to ensure uniform coating, optimal packing density, and consistent electrical performance. Many LFP powders exhibit irregular shapes and agglomerates, making them difficult to process on traditional vibratory screeners. Conventional sieves often suffer from screen mesh blinding and product loss during fine particle separations. In some cases, magnetic impurities must also be removed to protect downstream battery performance.

Elcan Industries has worked closely with companies producing and refining LFP cathode powders for stationary energy storage use cases. Our Hi-Sifter high-energy screening machine has proven effective at removing oversize agglomerates while maintaining tight control over fines, with successful cuts as fine as 10 microns. The vertical energy of the Hi-Sifter prevents mesh blinding and maximizes product yield. When ultra-fine separations are needed or powders fall below traditional sieve limits, our high tech Elbow Jet Air Classifier provides a screenless solution capable of precision classification down to sub-5 micron sizes.

To further enhance purity, Elcan’s CG Electromagnetic Separator (Class II Div II & UL rated) removes ferrous contaminants, achieving up to 18,500 Gauss. Our state-of-the-art toll processing facility allows battery manufacturers to conduct full-scale trials, optimizing particle size and purity before implementing large-scale production processes.
