Applications

Sieving Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC)

What is Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC)? Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is a highly refined, plant-based powder derived from cellulose. While it is traditionally used in food and pharmaceutical applications, MCC is increasingly being adopted in industrial formulations, including biodegradable composites, additive manufacturing, extrusion, coatings, and R&D for sustainable materials. Its lightweight, fibrous structure makes it an attractive choice as a binder, bulking agent, or filler in polymer systems, 3D printing materials, and green chemistry.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

Why is Sieving MCC Important? Consistent particle size is critical when Microcrystalline Cellulose is used in powder blending, compounding, or extrusion. Variations in particle size can lead to poor flowability, inconsistent dispersion, or reduced mechanical performance in final products. In 3D printing, for example, MCC needs to be screened to sub-100 micron sizes to ensure smooth layer deposition and reliable printing performance. Due to its fibrous and low-density nature, MCC is prone to dusting, static cling, and screen mesh blinding, which can overwhelm conventional screening systems.

Elcan Industries has worked with companies using MCC in both pharma and non-pharma, forward-looking material systems, including bio-based plastics, powder bed additives, and experimental composites. Using our Hi-Sifter high-energy screening system, we can screen MCC powders down to 75 microns or finer with no mesh blinding. The system’s vertical energy input breaks up soft agglomerates while maintaining throughput. For finer requirements or static-sensitive batches, our Allgaier tumbler screener features a built-in air knife system to prevent clogging and keep lightweight MCC moving consistently through the mesh. We also offer ferrous contaminant removal via our CG Electromagnetic Separator, ensuring clean, consistent output. Trials and full-scale toll processing can be performed at our dedicated facility.
