Sieving Pharmaceutical Excipients

What Are Excipients? Pharmaceutical excipients are inactive ingredients used in drug formulations to support the delivery, stability, manufacturability, and absorption of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). These substances—such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), maltitol, lactose, starches, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide—play critical roles in ensuring tablets and capsules meet strict performance, shelf-life, and safety standards. Although they don’t contribute directly to therapeutic effects, excipients can significantly affect drug solubility, disintegration, flow, and patient experience.

Why Is Sieving Important for Excipients? Pharmaceutical manufacturing demands high precision and consistency. Excipients are typically sized to meet tight particle specifications—often below 180 microns—to promote reliable flowability, compressibility, and uniformity in tablet and capsule formulations. Oversized particles can result in dosing inconsistencies, while excess fines may interfere with disintegration or clog tablet press tooling. Static-prone, hygroscopic, or irregularly shaped powders can cause screen blinding in conventional sieving systems.

Our Hi-Sifter screening machine uses vertical energy to deliver sharp particle size cuts—commonly down to 44 microns or finer—without screen blinding or throughput issues. This method is particularly effective for excipients like MCC, maltitol, and mannitol, which are prone to agglomeration and poor flow.

For finer separations or when screen limitations exist, our Elbow Jet Air Classifier allows for classification down to 10 microns.
