Applications

Yttrium Powder

What is Yttrium powder? Yttrium is a rare earth element commonly used in powder form for advanced ceramics, superconductors, laser systems, phosphors, fuel cells, and alloying agents. Yttrium Oxide (Y₂O₃) and metallic yttrium powders are especially important in LED production, thermal barrier coatings, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to their exceptional thermal, optical, and corrosion-resistant properties. These applications demand ultra-fine, highly uniform, and contamination-free powders.

Contract Manufacturing Experience

In high-value applications like semiconductors, aerospace coatings, and advanced electronics, the particle size of yttrium powder must be tightly controlled—often down to 10 microns or finerto ensure even dispersion, controlled reactivity, and high surface area. Oversized particles or agglomerates can lead to non-uniform sintering, poor packing density, and reduced product performance. Traditional sieving equipment struggles with fine, static-prone rare earth powders, often resulting in screen blinding, low yields, and inconsistent separations.

Elcan Industries offers advanced screening solutions specifically suited for rare earth materials like yttrium powder. Using our Hi-Sifter high-energy sieving system, we can screen yttrium powders down to 10 microns with tight particle cutoffs and no screen blinding. The system’s vertical energy input helps prevent clumping and keeps the powder fluidized throughout the process. For ultra-fine separations or screenless classification, our Elbow Jet Air Classifier offers a precision solution capable of classifying yttrium powder down to 1 micron.

We also use our CG Electromagnetic Separator, rated Class II Div II and UL listed, to remove any trace ferrous contaminants from high-purity yttrium batches—essential for maintaining performance in electronics and ceramic-grade applications. Manufacturers can conduct full-scale toll processing or small-batch pilot trials at our NY facility.
